WHY CAN’T WE TRUST THEM

The nation grew from European seed
Who are they
Why, they’re the Chameleons
They stood separate
My way, your way, the other way
But today
The big C is still here
So are they
But they have cajoled us
Taught us that they ‘all’
Had our best interests
At heart
But how can they
Such clear boundaries
Separate the chameleons
Yet, with no shame
With no fear of failure
Walk like ghosts
From one party to the next
Lured by those in power
Throwing our trust
Back in our faces
See me, I was here when you saw me
I gained your trust, your respect
But I’m with the losers
I have to cross over the lines
First one and then another
You see, I can still play
In that huge playpen
See me make us the fool
On the floor of our lives
Safe, where only twenty years
Would have seen them
Shoving a broom
Unable to be elected
Dogcatcher, if they were elected
But no, they don’t shovel manure
Except for that which fills us
Day by day
Oh, Canada, I love you
Please make politicians be
The men and women
We want them to be….
